Clean Car Discount to end 31 December 2023
The Clean Car Discount scheme will end on 31 December 2023.
Vehicles with high CO2 emissions that are registered up to 31 December 2023 will still be charged a clean car fee. From 1 January 2024, they won’t have to pay the clean car fee anymore.
The Clean Car Standard – targeted at vehicle importers to encourage a greater supply of lower emission vehicles – will continue as normal.
You may see an increase in people trying to register lower emission cars before the end of this year, or people waiting until January to register their higher emission vehicle to avoid paying a clean car fee.
Customers that register a vehicle with low emissions have until 11.59pm on 31 December 2023 to apply for their clean car rebate on the Waka Kotahi website. If they don’t apply before then – with all the required documentation – they won’t be able to get a rebate.
