Changes to recording engine type for electric vehicles from 1 July 2017
New engine type definitions for electric, hybrid and fuel cell vehicles are being introduced and are to be used from 1 July 2017.
This initiative is part of the Government’s wider Electric Vehicles Programme which aims to increase electric vehicles in New Zealand’s vehicle fleet to 64,000 by the end of 2021, to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Effective date
You will see these in the system from 24 June 2017 but they should not be entered until 1 July 2017.

New Table 2-2-9 Engine Type codes - effective 1 July 2017
The following engine type codes are to be used for vehicles certified for entry from 1 July 2017 inclusive.

Vehicles already recorded
The Transport Agency is undertaking a back capture of existing vehicles. The MVR will be updated so that all vehicles have the correct engine type definition from 1 July.
Normal procedures in the LATIS manual should still be applied for corrections and modifications to existing vehicles. See LATIS manual 2-2-2 IVATT screen procedures (log on required) for WoF vehicles and LATIS manual 3-1-1 ICORE screen (log on required) for CoF vehicles. Comments on the reason for any change should be recorded notes and any certification keyed to the IVCERT screen.
Emissions Rule for electric (petrol extended), electric (diesel extended) vehicles, electric hybrid petrol and electric hybrid diesel vehicles
The Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Exhaust Emissions 2007 does not apply to ancillary engines that do not power the vehicles wheels (eg refrigeration units, motorhome electricity generators). The generators in electric (petrol extended), electric (diesel extended), electric hybrid petrol and electric hybrid diesel vehicles are not ancillary engines and are required to meet the Rule.
