  • Changes to light vehicle inspections from 1 November 2026

    The Government has announced changes to light vehicle inspections, which will start to come into effect from 1 November 2026.

    There are changes to inspections for cars, vans, people-movers, trailers and rental vehicles. There are also changes for motorcycles registered before 1 January 2000.

    This announcement follows public consultation on proposed changes to light vehicle inspections, which ran from 29 October to 17 December 2025.

  • Update on Suzuki Fronx

    16 April 2026

    Late last year, NZTA advised owners of Suzuki Fronx vehicles in New Zealand to stop carrying passengers in the rear seats of the vehicles. This followed the failure of a safety belt in a laboratory crash test carried out by the Australasian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP).

    Suzuki NZ is now:

    • in the process of contacting affected vehicle owners to arrange the recall to replace the rear seat belt, which will be carried out at Suzuki dealers.
    • restarting the sales of Suzuki Fronx which will all be equipped with the appropriate rear seat belt.

    Once the recall for the vehicle has been completed at a Suzuki NZ dealer, the advice not to carry back seat passengers can be ignored.

  • Updated cardan shaft park brake advice and labels

    We've updated our guidance for vehicle owners around cardan shaft park brakes (CSPBs). There's a new version of the safety alert and an updated label (sticker) design.

    The new labels will be available to order soon, but the old label is still acceptable for the purposes of passing a CoF.

  • VPN certificate update on 11 April 2026

    We're replacing VPN certificates at the end of the day on 11 April 2026.

    The next time you log into the VPN after the change, you'll see a pop-up window warning you about the new certificate.

    Click Yes to continue connecting to the VPN. You only need to do this once.

    If you have problems connecting to the VPN, check if the pop-up window is hiding in the background behind your other windows.

  • VIN photo for Repair certification – unable to enter notes form

    02 March 2026

    From 16 March 2026, you’ll need to upload a photo of the vehicle’s VIN or chassis number when completing a Repair certification – unable to enter notes form.

    This will ensure the vehicle details are captured correctly. The online form will be updated to include this function.
